London

Lloyd’s Building

Inside Out

The Lloyd's building was designed with its insides on the outside. A bank of four elevators are on the left, a staircase is in the foreground, and air and water pipes are visible. It's pretty stunning.

This is probably my favorite photo from my trip to Britain. This building has its insides on the outside and makes for a great subject. All the shapes and structures give it an otherworldly feeling. The building is generally silver, so it works great with black and white.

Westminster Bridge

Big Ben and Westminster Bridge

Cars and buses pass over the Westminster Bridge toward Big Ben.

Traffic crosses the Westminster Bridge heading toward Big Ben. This is a 10-second exposure and the trick here was to wait for these double-decker buses to roll through with all their lights.

The Shard

This may be my second-favorite picture from this trip. It is the Shard, the pointy skyscraper in London. I’m using the 10-mm lens, but the lens distortion on the bottom makes the people stretched a bit. It causes the picture to look like an architectural rendering rather than an actual photograph.

Shard's Base

At the base of the Shard, Europe's tallest building. Designed by Renzo Piano, it satisfies skyscraper lovers like me.

Big Ben

Big Ben

The most famous clocktower in the world, Big Ben. Needed a panorama to capture this level of detail with the entire top.

This is a panorama of a few shots. I wanted enough resolution to see detail, and to get the entire top part of the tower.

The London Eye

London’s great ferris wheel is essentially a humungous bicycle wheel on the banks of the Thames. I'm including two color and two black and white, just to see the contrast.

Below the London Eye

Standing below the London Eye, it looks like a large bicycle wheel.

London Eye

A Ferris wheel on the Thames known as the London Eye. The wheel moves almost imperceptibly slow--it takes 30 minutes per revolution.

An Assortment…

The Parliament building reflected on the Thames is a little fuzzy for my eye. But, I still like the photo. The tree is painted blue; I don’t know why but it is striking.

The Gherkin between two buildings

The Gherkin framed by two buildings. This building is dramatic from almost every angle.
