WTC Transit Station
I love the new transit station at the World Trade Center. The Calatrava-designed structure—building seems like too conventional a word to adequately describe it—brings some creativity and joy in the otherwise banal architecture of the new World Trade Center.
An interstitial hallway from another planet. I was able to capture it before all the screens, ads, and shops littered the space with corporate logos. This was one of my favorite shots from this year.
Inside the Oculus
The Oculus is sublime. One of my favorite indoor spaces in the city. It works far better from the inside than it does the outside, where its proportions disappoint. Because the main concourse is several stories underground, it seems vast when you’re standing inside it.
The Fulton Center
The Fulton Center, the main transit hub on Fulton Street, where four subway lines converge, has the lovely “sky catcher” skylight. I wanted to capture the dimensionality of it, along with the wrapping staircase, before the guards reprimanded me (which they did). It makes me happy that we still have a commitment to public art and innovative design.
As I walked toward the WTC site, I stopped in St. Paul’s, the church Washington visited after his inauguration. Great views of the site are afforded from the cemetery there.

Outside the Oculus
Some shots from the plaza. I do respond to the wings on the Oculus—the asymetric fans that swoop from the top. But, the overall scale of the oculus when I walk around it somehow diminishes its stature.
