Downtown Walkabout

I began coming here before it was fully open. Now, it’s nice to see people buzzing about. This is my first evening visit. The lighting along with the blue light bleeding in from the windows are a pleasing contrast.

This is a 1-second exposure, while I balanced my camera on the railing. Not perfect, but close enough for me.

Harbor Sunset

This was shot from the Brooklyn Bridge promenade. It was one of those days where I wasn’t sure we’d have a sunset, but there one was as we walked across the bridge.

Smokestack Building

Smokestack Building under the Brooklyn Bridge

The smokestack building underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Built in 1936, it was a boiler for a nearby building that is now gone.

This tiny building underneath the Brooklyn Bridge was built in 1936 as part of the WPA. It was a boiler for a larger complex of buildings that no longer exist here. This was a time when the waterfront was a tangle of docks and shipping companies. I’m glad they preserved this little Art Deco gem.

DUMB

New Yorkers love their quirky neighborhood names, particularly those formed from squishing words together (Soho, Tribeca, etc.). Here, we’re in DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. However, we’re a bit beyond the overpass, so perhaps we’re just in DUMB.

Under the Manhattan Bridge

Under the Manhattan Bridge -- truly DUMBO, without the overpass, I suppose, so merely DUMB.
