Brooklyn’s View

Manhattan Skyline from Brooklyn

A panorama of Lower Manhattan from Brooklyn. In the foreground are supports for the docks that once lined this waterfront.

The “Sticks”

Inside Brooklyn Bridge Park there is a section along the water where the skeletal remnants of the old piers protrude from the river. These are called “the sticks” and it’s a fine place to photograph Lower Manhattan’s skyline. It’s common to see photographers here, and I often talk to some when I visit the sticks.

Three color treatments

I’ve included the same photo here with three different color treatments. First is black and white, the second is a split tone version, and the third is the color version. The color photo was taken at a different time (about 10 minutes later), so you’ll notice the clouds are different.

The sticks also lend themselves to a more abstract subject, especially with the light’s reflections on the water as a backdrop.

Under the Manhattan Bridge

Caught this couple sitting in the grass beneath the Manhattan Bridge. The shot isn’t quite as sharp as I’d like, but I like the composition.

Brooklyn Bridge & Skyline

Brooklyn Bridge with Manhattan

On the other side of the park, one can shoot the skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge together. This is an 8-second exposure to smooth out the water.
