Washington DC

Introduction

A brief trip to DC. I’ve been here a hundred times before, but I wanted to find some new ways to capture that which must be photographed a thousand times per day. Visited the U.S. Capitol for the first time, and the whole street art scene around Blagdon Alley.

Golden Hour Shadows

FDR Memorial

Bread Line at the FDR Memorial

Remembrance of the bread line at the FDR Memorial.

The FDR Memorial is tucked away in what seems like a forgotten area of the National Mall. It lies on a spit of land between the Potomac and the Tidal Basin. It conveys FDR’s journey through a series of dioramic sections. This one addresses the Great Depression and depicts the bread lines that were common then.

It was getting dark when I shot this, and I wanted to use black and white to pull out the texture of the sculpture and etched lettering behind them.

It was dark by the time I shot this, so I was using a tripod and I wanted a wide field, but with as much sharpness and detail as the lens could muster. Black and white treatment allows for emphasis of these details, and there is little value gained by using color because there are no colors in the room except for the yellow lights.

Love @ Blagdon Alley

Rainbow Frame for my love.

Inside the Capitol

Statuary Hall in the Capitol

The ceiling of Statuary Hall in the US Capitol.

Took the tour. First time. It was a great experience, I have to say. No lines, great guide—even the food in the commissary was delicious.

The shot under the dome was at 10mm and it still cannot capture the feeling of being there. The second shot is the ceiling in the Statuary Hall.

Supreme Court

Supreme Court Facade

The facade of the Supreme Court.

I grossly exaggerated the texture on this photo. I wanted to pull out all the detail in the facade and give it more dimension.

Tidal Basin

The Tidal Basin in DC

Looking across DC's Tidal Basin.

This is a fairly short time lapse overlooking the Tidal Basin. I wanted to capture that glassy water effect, but what surprised me most was the pleasant violet tone that was delivered by the camera.

Supreme Court view

The view from the Supreme Court. The red hats are due to the Washington Nationals' victory parade having just won the World Series.

The Lincoln sculpture was in the Capitol. It’s a little too fuzzy for my eye—the lighting was not great. The second shot was taken at the doors of the Supreme Court. The red hats may not be what you think they are—those are people who attended the World Series victory parade for the local baseball team.
